I’ve reblogged a few of these vintage covers recently, and I guess I should answer for that. Ta-Nehisi Coates was spot on when he credited the appeal of Ebony’s new tumblr to a “nostalgic sense that we were, somehow, more beautiful then.”
For me, that beauty abides in a (probably ignorant; probably naive) sense of community. Everything’s so splintered and specialized now: it must’ve been nice to know for sure that your next-door neighbor, like you, knew exactly “How Negroes Live in Russia.”
